The history of WPS Optometrists Over the years Daventry has expanded and the business has grown to accommodate the increasing population. Initially only the ground floor of the building was used and there was one consulting room. This has gradually increased so that aspects of the business are located on all floors, from a small workshop in the cellar to old file and record storage in the 3rd floor attic. The practice now has four consulting rooms most of which are in almost constant use.
Circa 1935 - Knight & Son Opticians- The practice was established by Montague Knight and his brother as a branch practice to their main site of Knight & Son in Northampton. It was originally located in 25 High Street, Daventry. 1939-1945 - While Monty was servicing in the Navy, the Daventry practice was run by his father Leslie Knight, conducting eye examinations on half a day a week. 1946 - Monty Knight returned to Daventry practice after the War. Late 1940's - NHS eye examination was introduced and Daventry practice quickly rose to conducting examinations 3 days a week.
1959 - Keith Gillott purchased the Daventry branch of Knight and Son and building August 1967 - Gillott & Whiteley Opticians - Graham Whiteley joined the practice as a partner 1976 - Francess Howell joined the practice for her pre-registration year August 1976 - Vincent Proctor joined the practice full time after completing his pre-registration year at Coventry & Warwickshire Hospital. 1977 - Francess Howell finished pre-registration year and left the practice 1980 - Vincent Proctor left the practice to gain experience working for a different company 1980 - Trevor Timpson started his pre-registration year at the practice 1981 - Vincent Proctor rejoined the practice October 1982 - Trevor Timpson left the practice 1983 - A satellite practice in Southam was opened November 1988 - Keith Gillott retired from the practice selling his share to Vincent Proctor 1989 - Francess Howell rejoined the practice working 2 days a week August 1992 - Whiteley & Proctor Optometrists - The practice changed its name August 1992 - James Sutton joined the practice for his pre-registration year October 1993 - Branch practice in Southam closed 1994 - Francess Howell ceased regular locum work for the practice April 1994 - James Sutton became junior partner April 1997 - Whiteley, Proctor & Sutton Optometrists - James Sutton purchased Graham Whiteley's share of the partnership and the practice changed its name January 1999 - Claire Anstee joined the team in Daventry to fit contact lenses
May 1999 - John Amson retires as Dispensing Optician May 1999 - Angela May joins the team as a full-time Dispensing Optician in Northampton September 1999 - Daventry branch nominated for 1999 Optician Eyecare Awards January 2000 - WPS Optometrists - name change for the new millennium November 2000 - Graham Whiteley retires from the practice December 2000 - John Hendy joins the team as a full-time Dispensing Optician in Daventry January 2001 - Claire Anstee purchases 1/3 share of the partnership January 2001 - Refurbishment and redecoration to both branches offers a new look January 2001 - Amanda Anderson joins the team in Northampton as an Optometrist April 2001 - Daventry branch named Dispensing practice of the Year at the 2001 Optician Eyecare Awards May 2001 - Daventry branch winners of the 2001 Daventry Small Business of the Year September 2001 - Hearing services introduced May 2002 - Daventry branch winners of the 2002 Daventry Web Site of the Year June 2002 - ChromaGen system launched to help dyslexics. April 2003 - Northampton branch winners in the 2003 Optician Eye Care Awards for Contact Lens Practice of the Year. Daventry branch finalists in the 2003 Optician Eye Care Awards for Children's Eye Care Practice of the Year, Dispensing Practice of the Year, Marketing Initiative Practice of the Year and Website of the Year. May 2003 - Daventry branch winners of the 2003 Daventry Web Site of the Year June 3003 - New retinal photography service launched. July 2003 - Corneal topography service launched. August 2003 - Lorna Minor joins the team in Daventry as a pre-reg optometrist. September 2003 - Emma McEvoy joins the team as an optometrist in Daventry September 2003 - Vincent Proctor retires.
